The compressor is the most expensive component in your AC โ and the one most stressed by Dubai's extreme heat. Catching early warning signs saves you from a full compressor replacement. Here is what to look for.
Most AC compressors are rated to operate with outdoor temps up to 52ยฐC. Dubai regularly hits 46โ48ยฐC in July and August. Combined with 10โ12 months of annual runtime (vs 3โ4 months in Europe), a Dubai compressor works 3โ4x harder over its lifetime than the same unit in a temperate climate. Early detection and maintenance is the only way to extend compressor life.
These signs range from early warnings (cheap to fix) to critical failures (expensive). Catching them early makes the difference.
The most common compressor symptom โ unit runs continuously but the room never cools. The compressor is not compressing refrigerant properly, so the cooling cycle cannot complete.
Could also be: low refrigerant, dirty coilsA clicking sound when the AC tries to start, or the unit hesitating before the compressor kicks in. Often a failing start capacitor โ an inexpensive fix if caught early. Left unfixed, it burns out the compressor motor.
Early warning โ cheap to fix nowThe outdoor unit keeps tripping the DB board โ especially when temperatures peak in the afternoon. A compressor drawing excessive current due to failing windings or a seized piston will repeatedly trip the breaker.
Urgent โ do not keep resettingA loud metallic rattling or banging when the outdoor unit runs โ especially at startup. Internal compressor components loosening, a broken piston, or mounting bolts vibrating loose. Needs inspection before the damage worsens.
Urgent โ turn off and callThe unit starts, runs for 2โ3 minutes, shuts off, then starts again โ without cooling the room. Often means the compressor is overheating and the thermal overload protection is shutting it down before it burns out.
Could also be: dirty condenser, low refrigerantA hissing sound from the outdoor unit or copper lines usually means refrigerant is leaking โ often from a compressor valve seal that has failed. Running the compressor on low refrigerant accelerates its wear significantly.
Fix the leak before refilling gasMore vibration than usual when running โ particularly noticeable if the unit is wall-mounted. Could be loose mounting hardware, an unbalanced fan blade, or internal compressor imbalance.
Early warning โ often inexpensive fixA failing compressor loses efficiency โ it draws more current to do the same job. If your electricity bill has jumped without a change in usage habits, a struggling compressor is one of the possible causes worth checking.
Could also be: dirty coils, low refrigerantThis is the most important decision when compressor issues are confirmed. Here is the honest framework we use.
Unit is under 5 years old
Still under manufacturer warranty (compressor warranty is usually 5 years)
Fault is capacitor or start relay โ not the compressor body itself
Repair quote is under 40% of full unit replacement cost
Unit is over 8 years old โ other components will fail soon after compressor
Compressor body has seized or burned out internally
Repair quote exceeds 50% of a new equivalent unit
Old fixed-speed unit โ a new inverter will pay back the cost in DEWA savings within 2โ3 summers
